The Linux Foundation: Our Newest Member Is Toyota
An internationally renowned company has joined The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux was glad to announce. The internationally renowned company I am talking about is Toyota Motor Corporation (commonly known simply as Toyota), the world’s largest automobile manufacturer by sales and production. Toyota is now a Gold member of The Linux Foundation.
"We are very pleased to welcome Toyota to The Linux Foundation. The company’s leadership and proven innovation will bring important contributions to the advancement of Linux," said Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. "Toyota’s investment in Linux is a testament to the ubiquity of the operating system and its ability to support the latest market requirements."
By joining The Linux Foundation, Toyota aims to maximize its investment in Linux while at the same time foster open innovation throughout the automotive ecosystem. Consumers have come to expect that they cars offer the same type of connectivity they enjoy at home or at the office. To satisfy the consumer demand, car manufacturers are using new technologies to turn cars into wireless devices. The open-source Linux operating system gives carmakers the flexibility they need to meet consumer demand and bring the latest techonology features to the market.
“Linux gives us the flexibility and technology maturity we require to evolve our In-Vehicle-Infotainment and communications systems to address the expectations of our customers,” said Kenichi Murata, Project General Manager, Electronics Development Div. 1, TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION. “The Linux Foundation provides us with a neutral forum in which we can collaborate with the world’s leading technology companies on open innovation that accelerates that evolution.”
In related news, you may want to know that the winner of the 20th Anniversary of Linux T-shirt design contest has been announced. You can read more about this topic (and view the winning design) in this article.
