The latest addition to the World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online game, The Wrath of the Lich King has finally been released to the hoards of fans; some ten million of them to be more precise. This expansion pack brings several new features to the game: new areas to explore, new content to play with and the possibility to gain ten more levels, thus reaching a top level of 80.

The Wrath of the Lich King was released at an international level; in each country the expansion pack DVD was put on sale at midnight. This is to say that the launch was coordinated, but due to the different time zones, some players got the much awaited game sooner than others. This may not be of significant importance to some of you, but to WoW gamers it makes a world of a difference – those who got their hands on the expansion pack first, already started on the journey to reaching lvl 80 status.

How many people turned up at midnight to get the game? According to media reports from all over the world, the number of WoW fans who showed up varied from some 2,000 in the UK, about 1,000 in Australia to a meager 300 in Romania. If the latter sounds familiar, it is the country where the NASA hacker was recently put under trial.

Does Blizzard Entertainment have anything to fear from the competition? The thing is that even if Word of Warcraft has some ten million registered users, there are still other MMO titles that could throw a wrench in Blizzard’s well oiled machine. Chief operation officer with Blizzard, Paul Sams believes the Star Wars MMO is exactly such a title because the game is built on a very popular franchise. Another title that is quickly rising through the ranks is Warhammer Online, which has recently doubled the amount of experience points you get from RvR combat.
