After releasing the Skype for Android app, Skype has now announced that it updated its Skype for iPhone app. The latest version of the Skype for iPhone app is version 2.1.2 (iTunes link ); it was released earlier this week. The interesting thing about this latest version of the Skype for iPhone app is that it comes with a few interesting improvements – a new settings options, new looks for Skype settings, and improved notifications. Let’s take a quick look at all these improvements, shall we?

New Go Offline Settings Option
The new “Go Offline” settings option allows you to choose the app’s behavior when it runs in the background. In the past the app would just run endlessly in the background; now you can set it up so the app will “go offline” after a specific amount of time.

It must be mentioned here that the Skype for iPhone app also has a “Never stay online” setting. This means that when you switch from Skype to another app, Skype automatically goes offline.

According to Skype’s Peter Parkes the “Go offline” and the “Never stay online” settings may help extend battery life.

New Skype Settings Looks
Skype has tweaked the looks of the Skype settings and has added more precise descriptions for the options.

Better Event Notifications
Skype also tweaked the event notifications so that they now appear in a friendlier format.

In related news, Yahoo! also updated its Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app. The latest version, Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone v. 2.0, comes with several new features: the application can run in the background while you play with other apps, the application lets you make video calls, lets you make voice calls, and low cost landline, mobile and international voice calls. The application’s language support has been extended to cover Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia, and Romanian.
