The very first details about the upcoming Linux Mint 18 have been released to the public. Lead Linux Mint Developer Clem Lefebvre revealed the operating system’s codename and a few other interesting details.

They’re all presented below, after the commercial break.

Linux Mint 18 will be called...

Sarah. The codename selected for Linux Mint 18 is Sarah. Just like Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela and Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca, the codename is of Hebrew origin.

“Sarah is a Jewish feminine given name found in many different areas of the world. Sarah is a consistently popular given name across Europe and North America, as well as in the Middle East—being commonly used as a female first name by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike, and remaining popular also among non-religious members of cultures influenced by these religions,” Lefebvre explained.

“Frequently, the name refers to Sarah, the wife of Abraham in the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Old Testament, and the Islamic Quran,” Lefebvre continued. In Arabic, Hebrew, and Persian, it means woman of high rank, often simply translated as “Princess”. In Modern Hebrew, “sarah” (שרה) is the word for ‘woman minister’.”

Previous Linux Mint Codenames
  • Linux Mint 13 Maya – Lefebvre’s daughter is called Maya. He chose the name after his daughter.
  • Linux Mint 14 Nadia – inspired by Nadezhda “Nadia” Chernyshevski, Maya’s best friend in Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars trilogy.
  • Linux Mint 15 Olivia – chosen because the olive tree symbolizes fruitfulness, beauty, and dignity.
  • Linux Mint 16 Petra – from the Greek word for rock or stone – πέτρα. Petra was the most ambitious release since the start of the Linux Mint project
  • Linux Mint 17 Qiana – the name of a fashion silk-like material that was popular in the disco-era. With Qiana, Lefebvre aimed for a silky smooth release.
  • Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca – of Hebrew origin, the name Rebecca means “to bind” or “to tie”.
  • Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela – also of Hebrew origin, Rafaela is the feminine form for Raphael, which means “God has healed”.
  • Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa – a classic vintage Italian, Spanish and Portuguese name. It translates to “rose”, a flower that symbolizes love and compassion.

Linux Mint 18 will be released...

Assuming there are no major delays, Linux Mint 18 Sarah will be released late this spring or early this summer. Sarah is estimated to be released around May or June 2016.

“Sarah is just a name at the moment and we’re still quite far from Linux Mint 18, but we’ll start working on this new series early,” said Lefebvre.

Linux Mint 18 Sarah will be a Long-Term Support (LTS) release, based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. This means that the operating system will be supported for 5 years, until 2021.

Linux Mint 18 will feature...

We don’t know precisely what it will feature. But, as Lefebvre explained, it will feature a new look and feel.
