Tests Prove Windows 7 Boot Time Decrease

At the beginning of the week we were announcing that the PDC pre-Beta version of Windows 7 has leaked out and is available for download on various BitTorrent trackers, such as The Pirate Bay. We were inundated by literally one comment asking to know how fast Microsoft’s new operating system boots. Until now we could only speculate about how much time it takes Windows 7 to boot up – now we can say for sure, so here it is.

Compared to Windows Vista, Windows 7 clocked a 20% faster boot time. Lifehacker recently conducted a boot time test of the main three Windows-based operating systems (XP, Vista, and 7) on a 3.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM system. The results showed that Windows XP Professional takes 27 seconds to boot; Windows Vista Ultimate takes 34 seconds; and Windows 7 pre-Beta PDC Ultimate takes 27 seconds. As you have no wonder noticed, XP and 7 are equally fast, 20.6% faster than Vista.

The good news is that the Windows 7 OS that was put to the test is a pre-Beta version, so it stands to reason that the final version will be capable of even faster boot times. According to Microsoft, the amount of time in which a proper system should boot is of 15 seconds. Does this mean that we can expect Windows 7 Final to boot in that allocated amount of time? Preliminary in-house tests run by Microsoft showed that Windows 7 is capable of reaching the 15 seconds mark.

The bad news is that once Microsoft starts to pile up features in Windows 7, the operating system could end up logging even lengthier boot times. The 15 seconds mark that Microsoft was talking about could and was achieved in the lab, but the overall aim is to get Windows 7 to boot as fast as possible no matter what system you are using.
