Android users won’t have long to wait long to play Temple Run 2, the sequel to one of the most successful apps of 2012. Temple Run 2 for Android is penciled in for a January 24th release.

This weekend, iOS users will get to enjoy Temple Run 2 on their iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. The sequel to the incredibly popular Temple Run 2 was rolled out to the App Store yesterday.
Next weekend, Android users will get to play the game on their devices. ImangiStudios revealed in an interview with The Guardian that Temple Run 2 for Android will be released to the masses next week, on the 24th of January, 2013.

Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi Studios, said that the initial plan was to concomitantly roll out the iOS and Android version of Temple Run 2. But because the iOS release was overwhelming, the decision was made to wait a week until the Android release. Still, it could have been worse – the delay could have been larger. I remind you that when Temple Run 1 was released, there was a 4 month gap between the iOS and Android version. Android users had to wait a staggering 4 months to get their hands on the game – this time they only have to wait a week.

Here’s a quick look at the new features Temple Run 2 introduces: beautiful new graphics, new organic environments, new obstacles, new characters, special powers for the characters, more achievements, and more powerups. Take a look at the Temple Run 2 official launch trailer below to get better idea of what I’m talking about.

I mentioned at the top that Temple Run is one of the most successful apps of 2012. According to Imangi Studios, overall, the app was downloaded more than 170 million times. And according to Apple, Temple Run was downloaded more than 75 million times from the App Store last year.

“The success of our game Temple Run in 2012 was nothing short of astonishing,” said Keith Shepherd. “We were simply looking to create a game that was fun and easy to play, but once it hit the App Store, the game took off. This past year, we saw more than 75 million downloads of Temple Run on iOS.”
