Symantec has recently made the news because it made Norton Antivirus 2011 and Norton Internet Security 2011 available for free download to the public – these are the Beta versions of Norton 2011. Besides releasing Beta versions of Norton 2011, the company that specializes in providing antivirus, antispyware, and internet security software solutions has also announced several new tools to help in the fight against cybercrime.

Symantec’s new tools are:
- Norton Safe web for Facebook
- Norton Power Eraser
- Norton Bootable Recovery Tool

Norton Safe Web for Facebook
Based on Norton Safe Web, this tool is meant to offer protection against social networking threats. What it does is scan the user’s Facebook new feeds in search for malicious URLs. This way the user doesn’t click on a link that leads to a malware spreading site for example. According to Symantec, about 60% of all sites flagged by Norton Safe Web as unsafe, contain threats that can infect a computer with no user interaction (this is to say the user doesn’t have to download and install anything).

The Beta version of Norton Safe Web for Facebook is available for download here.

Norton Power Eraser

This tool addresses your need to remove software applications that presented themselves as genuine and legitimate, but are in fact malicious and harmful. You were fooled into installing these apps because you thought they were legit – after you installed them, you found out they weren’t. Norton Power Eraser can get rid of these harmful applications efficiently and easily. Most times special tactics are required to remove them – which can be troublesome. Norton Power Eraser makes things easy.

Norton Power Eraser is available for download here.

Norton Bootable Recovery Tool
If your system is so badly infected that it will not properly start up, you can use Norton Bootable Recovery tool to boot the computer into a safe state. The Norton Bootable Recovery Tool wizard automatically creates a CD/DVD/USB bootable device easily and rapidly.

Norton Bootable Recovery tool is available for download here. Please note that it is available to Norton subscribers only.
