Security company AVG recently introduced Crumble, an extension for Google’s Chrome web browser, extension that promises to let you surf the web in privacy. What it does is it prevents companies from tracking you via cookies.

The Crumble extension is available for free on the Chrome Web Store.
Please note that Crumble is currently in Beta.

Cookies, I have to remind you, can be used to track a computer user’s web browsing habits. Companies can use these tracking cookies to create user profiles and to deliver targeted ads to said users. If you care about your privacy and you don’t want companies to track you, I have some good news for you: AVG’s new Chrome extension puts a stop to online cookie tracking.

AVG’s Innovation Labs came up with Crumble, a Google Chrome extension that will prevent companies from tracking you via cookies. And mind you, it does this without breaking the websites you visit.

Here’s a quick look at the main features Crumble has to offer.

Crumble – Main Features
  • Block online tracking – companies won’t be able to use cookies to track you and thus they won’t be able to create a user profile.
  • See who’s tracking you – Crumble shows you who is tracking you on the websites you visit.
  • Always up to date – since Crumble does not rely on a predefined list of online trackers (a.k.a. a blacklist), it is always up to date. Instead of using a blacklist of trackers, Crumble identifies cookie types and controls what information is sent back to the web tracking companies.
  • No negative visual impact – Crumble does not break the websites you visit and does not hide any content on the websites you visit.
  • No preferential treatment – because they use whitelists, other similar tools offer preferential treatment to certain ad networks. Crumble does not! Because it doesn’t use whitelists or blacklists, it does not offer preferential treatment to certain trackers.
“Crumble intercepts 3rd party cookies and controls what information is sent back to the web tracking companies, stopping trackers from following and profiling you via cookies based on the sites you visit,” explained the Innovation Labs Team. “Because, we control rather than block 3rd party cookies, you will get the full website experience; no broken plugins, no missing content, no weird behavior.”

You can get the Crumble extension from Google’s Chrome Web Store.
The extension, at this time, is still in Beta.
