The popular Ubuntu 8.10, codename Intrepid Ibex, which was launched in the month of October 2008, was the basis for a new Linux distribution, one that is said to have “super powers”. It is not nuclear powered and it will not make your Linux powered machine as fast as a speeding train or anything like that; what it does is it takes an already very good operating system, Ubuntu 8.10, and fills the missing gaps – things like OpenOffice 3.0. (Ubuntu 8.10 at the time of its launch featured OpenOffice 2.4).

The next iteration of the Ubuntu OS will be the Jaunty Jackalope, or Ubuntu 9.04. The thing is that this operating system is still in its early development phase – we got a glimpse of the Jackalope back in November when Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 1 was released to testers and fans. The final version of the Jackalope will drop in the 23rd of April, 2009, assuming that everything goes according to plan and nothing influences the release schedule.

What exactly are you to expect from this Intrepid Ibex-based Super Ubuntu 2008.11? Here is a complete list of programs that the operating system features: Adobe Reader 8.1.3, aMule 2.2.2, aMSN 0.97.2, Autopackage 1.2.5, Brasero 0.8.4, Compiz Fusion Settings Manager, EnvyNG (command line version), Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4, Furius ISO Mount 0.11.1.0, GParted 0.3.8, GIMP 2.6.3, Gufw 0.20.6, MPlayer 1.0, NDISwrapper, NdisGTK, OpenOffice.org 3.0, Opera 9.63, PulseAudio GUI, RealPlayer 11, SFS Technology 0.3.0.4, Smart Package Manager 1.1.1, Skype 2.0.0.72, StartUp-Manager 1.9.11, Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.16, Ubuntu Restricted Extras, Ubuntu Tweak 0.4.4, VLC Media Player 0.9.4, Wine 1.1.10, Wine-Doors 0.1.2, Zero Install 0.3.7.

As you may have noticed, there are some software programs in that list that need updating – which you will want to do if you truly care about having a “super powered” Ubuntu OS. To be more precise, here are the applications that you should update: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5, GIMP 2.6. 4, and Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.19.
