Blizzard recently announced that "StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void,” the conclusion of the StarCraft II saga, will be released by the end of the year.

The standalone Legacy of the Void game, which promises to offer the ultimate competitive real-time strategy experience, will arrive by winter.

But since its July, it’s kind of hard to think about winter. So what can a StarCraft II fan do right now? The answer is pre-order Legacy of the Void from the official Legacy of the Void website.

If you do, if you preorder StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, Blizzard has some surprises for you:
  • Immediate access to all three “Whispers of Oblivion” prologue missions featuring the legendary Dark Templar Zeratul, if you digitally pre-purchase Legacy of the Void through Battle.net.
  • Entry to the ongoing Legacy of the Void Beta test if you pre-purchase digitally or lock in your pre-order at select retailers.
  • Unlock access to an upcoming, yet-to-be-revealed StarCraft Warrior Hero in Heroes of the Storm.

How much does Legacy of the Void cost? Well, it all depends on the edition you want to get. The Standard Edition is priced at $39.99 while the Digital Deluxe Edition is priced at $59.99. If you spend more and get the Digital Deluxe Edition, you’ll unlock multiple in-game bonuses for other Blizzard games:
  • Archon battle pet for World of Warcraft.
  • Void Seeker mount for Heroes of the Storm
  • Protoss card back for Hearthstone
  • Protoss-themed portraits and unit skin for StarCraft II

Please note that these bonuses will become available upon Legacy of the Void’s release.

There will also be a retail-exclusive Collector’s Edition. Available at select retailers for a suggested retail price of $79.99, the Collector’s Edition will feature all the Digital Deluxe Edition bonuses presented above. On top of that, it will come with a few extras: a special edition of the upcoming full-color hardcover StarCraft Field Manual (retail edition SRP $45); a DVD loaded with cinematics and special features; and a CD soundtrack.

Legacy of the Void is the third and final chapter in the StarCraft saga. You’re cast in the role of Hierarch Artanis, the leader of the Protoss race, and you’re tasked with reclaiming the Protoss homeworld of Aiur. Years ago, Aiur fell to the Zerg swarm; so you have to raise a Golden Armada, a powerful fleet of warships, and reclaim the Protoss homeworld.

The action in Legacy of the Void picks up where Heart of the Swarm, the first StarCraft II expansion, left of. And speaking about Heart of the Swarm, Blizzard announced that Heart of the Swarm went standalone. This means that the original StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is no longer required to play the Heart of the Swarm expansion.

Getting back to Legacy of the Void, Blizzard explained that the game is being built to deliver the ultimate StarCraft II experience.

“With Legacy of the Void, we’re giving some of Blizzard’s most iconic characters an unforgettable sendoff and delivering the climactic StarCraft finale players deserve,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “At the same time, we’re excited to bring StarCraft II multiplayer into a whole new era with a host of major new gameplay modes and enhancements—we can’t wait to see what the future holds for StarCraft II competition.”

The multiplayer features that Legacy of the Void has to offer are Archon Mode and Allied Commanders. In Archon Mode, two players share control over a single base; that makes it ideally suited for novices who want to learn from a veteran player. In Allied Commanders, each player will choose a powerful commander to lead their favorite army into battle and fight in diverse scenarios with dynamic, campaign-style objectives.
