Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, the mobile game that EA very briefly mentioned at E3 earlier this year, has been released to Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

Until now, all I could tell you about the game was that it spans both the prequel and original trilogies, featuring characters from all six Star Wars movies. Now that the game has been released, I can tell you a bit more about it.

What sort of game is it?

Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes is a free-to-play collectible character RPG (role-playing game).

You have to collect iconic characters from the Star Wars universe, build a powerful team, and then use said team to defeat your enemies. The game features strategic turn-based RPG-style combat and lets you fight in iconic Star Wars locations, such as Hoth, Tatooine and Coruscant.

Choose between the light and the dark side

Collect light side characters, such as Han Solo and Ahsoka Tano, or dark side characters, such as Darth Vader and Count Dooku. Characters from all Star Wars movies can be collected. This includes the original 3 episodes, the 3 prequel episodes, the upcoming The Force Awakens, and even animated TV shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. As expected, each character has powerful, upgradeable attacks and unique abilities to offer.

“We've created a game for Star Wars and RPG fans where you can mix and match your favorite characters from across all the films and TV shows, creating squads with heroes from both the light and dark sides,” said John Salera, Executive Producer on Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes at Capital Games. “The game is simple to control but has incredible depth and breadth. You can strategize on which characters complement each other most, then make your custom teams more powerful with new gear and loot you win from battles, on all the planets and epic locations that you love, anytime, anywhere.”

How do I unlock and collect characters?

The only way to earn Darth Vader in this game is by completing achievements. With that being said, let’s see how you can unlock and collect other characters.

The most direct way to collect a character in Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes is by using character shards. Collect enough shards and you will be able to unlock a character and add said character to your team. The amount of shards you need to unlock a character depends on how powerful that character is.

There are several ways of getting character shards:
  • Hard Mode battles – as you play the game and complete light or dark side missions, you will unlock Hard Mode battles. These battles are worth it, because they have a chance of dropping Character Shards.
  • Achievements – earn rewards and character shards by completing various achievements.
  • Data packs and shipments – find character shards in data packs and shipments.
  • Purchases – buy character shards.

Tip: tap on Characters then Find on a character’s portrait to learn where you can find shards for them.

Each character has powerful, upgradeable attacks and abilities. Use XP bots to increase their level and strength, equip them with various gear to enhance their damage and unlock new abilities.

You can only have 1 of any particular character. If you get a duplicate character from a pack, it will turn to shards that you can use to promote the character.

From the main cantina screen, go the Daily Activities list. Daily activities are a great way of earning the experience points you need to level up.

There’s more than one way to play this game

Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes has six game modes to offer:
  • Light/Dark Side Battles – take your light/dark side squad and do battle in iconic locations.
  • Squad Arena – create a squad of light and dark side characters and compete against other players’ squads. Win and you’ll climb up the leaderboard.
  • Squad Cantina Battles – create a squad of light and dark side characters and do battle against other mixed-faction opponents.
  • Challenges – earn rewards by defeating a series of opponents.
  • Events – collect keys to unlock events and earn special rewards.
  • Galactic War (unlocks when you reach level 40) – use your entire roster of characters and fight through a series of increasingly difficult battles. If a character is defeated, you can’t use it anymore, you have to wait until the next day to use that character in Galactic War.

What is the early start reward pack?

Install and play Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes by December 4, 2015, and you will be rewarded with a free character from The Force Awakens. Android players get a First Oder Stormtrooper while iOS players get a Resistance Trooper. You’ll find your free character pack in the Data Card store after you reach level 4.

Go get Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes for Android from Google Play and Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes for iOS from Apple’s App Store.
