Sophos, company that specializes in providing antivirus, anti-spam, spyware removal software, network and internet security, has recently rolled out its Security Threat Report 2011. The report looks at 2010 and analyzes cybercrime, charts user experience of social networking (with an emphasis on the workplace), and loock at IT security trends for 2011.

If you would like to read Sophos’ Security Threat Report 2011, you can geti it here. I would like to focus on a small part of Sophos’ report, mainly the top 10 malware-hosting sites of 2010. The good old US of A continues to rank at the top spot in this top.

Here’s Sophos’ Top 10 Malware-Hosting Sites of 2010:
1. United States – 39%
2. France – 10%
3. Russia – 8.72%
4. Germany – 5.87%
5. China – 5.04%
6. United Kingdom – 2.68%
7. Poland – 2.43%
8. Canada – 2.03%
9. Ukraine – 1.97%
10. Hungary – 1.84%

Other countries – 20.03%

The fact that the United States are at the top is not surprising; the fact that France came in at #2 is surprising though since traditionally the number two spot went to China. It seems the number of malicious webpages in China has dropped considerably while the number of malicious webpages in France has increased considerably. France’s percentage went from 3.82% up to 10%.

"Many computer users still don’t realize that you can wind up with something nasty on your machine simply by visiting a website," commented Senior Technology Consultant with Sophos, Graham Cluley. "Over the year, we saw an average of 30,000 new malicious URLs every day – that's one every two-to-three seconds. More than 70 percent of these are legitimate websites that have been hacked – this means that businesses and website owners could inadvertently be infecting their patrons unintentionally and without knowledge."

The top 10 malware-hosting countries and other information is included in Sophos’ Security Threat Report 2011 that you can download here.
