The great thing about Bethesda’s games, apart from the open world exploration, is the fact that you can extensively customize them with mods. Want the Dovahkiin to summon a lute playing bear, you got it! Want the Sole Survivor to wander the wasteland dressed as Darth Vader, you got it!

Messing around with Skyrim and Fallout 4 mods has never an issue… for PC players. Mods are readily available straight from Bethesda.net or, if you want a larger selection of content, from Nexus Mods. For consoles, PS4 consoles in particular, getting access to mods has been a rocky road.

Mods for PS4 should have arrived in June (but didn’t)

Back in May, Bethesda announced that it released the Creation Kit, the tool used to create Fallout 4, tool that can be used by fans to create Fallout 4 mods. PC players could access mods from within the game itself or online on Bethesda.net.

Console players would have to wait a little longer to get access to mods. Bethesda said at the time that mods will come to Xbox One in May and PS4 in June. While mods for Xbox One did indeed arrive in May, mods for PS4 did not arrive in June.

Bethesda was ready for PS4 mods (Sony wasn’t)

After months of waiting, PS4 players finally found out why they didn’t get access to mods. Early September, Bethesda announced that talks with Sony lead nowhere. And while it had long been ready to offer mod support on PS4, Sony wasn’t.

"After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition," said Bethesda.

The only way to make Skyrim and Fallout 4 mods available on PS4 would be for Sony to let Bethesda offer proper mod support for PS4.

Bethesda and Sony finally worked it out (but there’s a catch)

It’s not clear what happened, but Sony finally agreed to mods on the PS4. On October 4, Bethesda announced that Skyrim and Fallout 4 mods are coming to PS4.

"We’re excited to announce that mod support is coming to PlayStation 4 for both Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4,” said Bethesda. "We and Sony have worked hard to make this possible. Mods on PlayStation 4 will allow you to modify and create your own content by using our Creation Kit. You will not be able to upload external assets with your PlayStation 4 mods, but you will be able to use any assets that come with the game, as most mods do."

That part about not being able to upload external assets is the catch. It means that PS4 mods can only use pre-existing assets from the game. You can’t turn Skyrim dragons into Thomas the Tank Engine, because that’s not available in the game. Mods can only use what’s already available in the game.

Mod support will first come to Skyrim Special Edition, which is scheduled to be released on October 28. This Special Edition is a remastered version of Skyrim that includes the base game and all the add-ons.

Skyrim Special Edition is one of many other games scheduled to be released this October.
