Skype's Popularity Increases: 30 Million Concurrent Users Online

The popularity of instant messaging and VoIP (voice over IP) application Skype keeps growing and growing and the numbers prove it. A couple of days ago Skype’s blogger-in-chief, Peter Parkes, announced that the number of concurrent Skype users has gone up to 30 million. It was the same Peter Parkes who announced in February, roughly a month ago, that there are 29 million concurrent users on Skype.

“A few hours ago, Skype passed a new milestone. There were 30 million people, online on Skype, at the same time,” said Parkes. He went on to say that “if there’s someone in your life who doesn’t use Skype, there’s never been a better time to tell them about all the wonderful things you can do – video calling on computers, mobiles and TVs, great value calls to phones, instant messaging, sending files and more.”

The number of Skype users has been growing consistently. Taking a look at this year alone, at the start of January 2011 news broke out that there are 27 million concurrent users on Skype. Then in mid-January, Skype announced that the number of users went up to 28 million. When February was drawing to a close, Skype announced that the number of users went up to 29 million. And a couple of days ago, during the last week of March 2011, Skype announced that there are 30 million users on Skype at the same time.

Back in November 2009 Skype was touting the fact that there are 20 million users on Skype at the same time. It took Skype a year to go up by 5 million; in November 2010 it announced that there are 25 million concurrent users online. And it took them only 4 months to go up another 5 million. As I’ve already mentioned, there are 30 million users online on Skype as Peter Parkes announced two days ago.
