There are several things to like about Skype, the quite easy to use application that allows you to stay in touch with the people you care about by sending them instant messages or making free audio and video calls. We first reported on Skype’s popularity back in 2009, when Skype announced that at any time, 20 million Skype users are signed in (out of the about 521 million users in all).

Since then Skype’s popularity has been continually increasing. The company has just come out to announce that the number of users logged in at the same time has gone up from 20 million to 25 million. At any time, day or night, there are 25 million Skype users logged in, presumably socializing with their friends and loved ones.

“We reached a new milestone for peak concurrent users: 25 million people online, on Skype, at the same time. Our software is designed to handle large numbers of concurrent users, with wideband audio and group video calls all flowing smoothly around the world – from mothers in Montevideo to their sons in San Francisco, and from contractors in Canberra to their suppliers in Seoul,” announced Vice President and General Manager for Consumer, Neil Stevens.

In related news, about a month ago Skype 5.0 for Windows graduated out of Beta. If this is the first time you’re hearing about Skype 5.0, here are the new bits and pieces this version has to offer:

Group video calling – A total of 10 people can video chat with one another at the same time. You can talk to 4 of your friends for example at the same time – you would see 4 windows on your screen, with a friend in each window. Please note this feature still carries the Beta tag.
Facebook integration – The latest Skype for Windows version integrates Facebook News Feed and Phonebook, thus making it easier for you to stay connected with your friends and with the communities that mean something to you. The integration of Facebook into Skype means that users can see their Facebook News Feed in Skype, post status updates, sync their status updates with their Skype mood message, comment on a friend’s update or wall post, like a friend’s update or wall post, call and send text messages to Facebook friends.
Fresh looks – Skype 5.0 comes with a fresh new look that, as Skype explained, is meant to make “voice and video calling, instant messaging, screen sharing, file sharing and more, intuitive and easy to navigate.”
