Great news for Skype for Windows users who are fans of social networking site Facebook. The development team behind the popular VoIP and instant messaging client has announced that the Facebook tab in Skype for Windows has been updated and improved.

Skype’s blogger-in-chief explained that the Facebook tab lets you see, comment and like the posts of your Facebook friends; lets you see your friends’ check-ins to Facebook Places, and lets you call friends on their mobile or landline from within the Facebook news feed. If one of your friends is using the Facebook tab as well, free Skype-to-Skype voice or video calls can be initiated.

You need to get the latest version of Skype for download if you don’t see the Facebook tab; you can grab it straight from Skype’s official site here. This latest version, as Peter Parkes explained, has a speedy interface that “lets you see more content in the same amount of screen space.”

In related Skype news, the company recently announced that it fixed a privacy vulnerability that plagued Skype for Android. The problem with Skype for Android was that data stored locally by the app (cached profile information, contacts, and message logs) was not encrypted and the database files had incorrect permissions. If you were to install a malicious 3rd party application on your Android device, that application could gain access to the data stored locally by Skype for Android.

And in related Facebook news, the social networking site announced that after using a non-HTTPS app you are automatically switched back to HTTPS when you’re finished. In the past if you wanted to use a non-HTTPS app, you would not be returned to a HTTPS connection – furthermore, the “Browse Facebook on a secure connection (HTTPS) whenever possible” option you enabled from the Account Security section on the Account Settings page would be disabled.
