Skype, the company behind the hugely popular IM (instant messaging) and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) application with the same name, announced back in February that it entered a deal with carrier Verizon Wireless. The purpose of the deal is to deliver Skype’s application to the multitude of Verizon Wireless customers.

When it announced the deal, Skype said that Verizon Wireless customers would be able to download and use Skype on their mobile devices starting this March – but it did not provide an exact date. Verizon Wireless customers would be able to use Skype on devices like the BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm2 9550, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, 8830 World Edition and Tour 9630, DROID by Motorola, DROID ERIS by HTC, and Motorola DEVOUR, said Skype at the time.

Skype has announced that today is the big day when the Skype app is released to Verizon Wireless customers. As of today, the 25th of March, you can download Skype mobile – granted of course you have a smartphone and a data plan.

With Skype mobile, Verizon Wireless customers can make and receive unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls, calls that do not cost a thing. They can also make calls to landline phones or international phone numbers. For these calls some charges apply – low ones. Last but not least, by using Skype mobile Verizon Wireless customers can send and receive unlimited instant messages to other Skype users.

According to Skype’s Peter Parkes, the app will work only on the mobile devices mentioned above. In the future more models will be supported.

“Skype mobile uses the Verizon Wireless voice network for the wireless connection of the Skype-to-Skype calls, giving you a reliable connection and top-notch call quality. Skype-to-Skype calls will not be charged against your monthly minute allowance or data plan. To make calls to international landline or mobile numbers, you’ll need to buy Skype Credit,” added Peter Parkes.
