Skype Introduces the Emerging Opportunities Team, Advertising in Skype

Earlier this month Skype announced that as part of its stride to bring its popular VoIP and instant messaging client to as many devices and platforms as possible, it created the Emerging Opportunities team. This new division, which will be lead by Vice President Jonathan Christensen, will be charged with managing Skype’s partnerships with various electronics manufacturers.

"We’ve created a new division, the Emerging Opportunities team, which will be responsible for our partnerships in the consumer electronics space and with silicon chip manufacturers. It’ll continue the strong relationships we have with TV manufacturers such as Panasonic, Samsung and Sony, as well as take on a number of incubation projects," announced Skype CEO Tony Bates.

Yesterday, Skype announced the launch of advertising Skype. Advertising in Skype for Windows will go live this week and they will be displayed in the Home Tab. Users will be able to share an ad via Facebook and Twitter, click an add to call the advertiser (if the advertiser added a Click & Call button that is), and close the ad by clicking the Close Ad button.

Doug Bewsher, Chief Marketing Officer at Skype, explained that the ads will help Skype develop its great products. He also explained that a great deal of effort has been put into testing how the ads are displayed so that the user experience is not impacted in a negative way.

"The Skype experience is our first priority, which is why we we’ve taken a lot of time working through and testing what kind of advertising would work best in the Skype environment," explained Doug Bewsher. "In fact, some of you may have seen some test ads from our friends at Rdio in the last month or two. As we roll out ads on a wider basis, we expect to continue to test and learn a lot more, and make any necessary adjustments along the way. We believe that advertising, when done in the right way, will help us continue to invest in developing great products."
