The first Skype-related news in this article is that the company has announced it entered a definitive agreement to acquire provider of mobile group messaging services GroupMe. Skype did not disclose the terms of the acquisition, so we don’t know how much it will pay for GroupMe. What Skype did disclose is what it hopes to achieve by acquiring GroupMe – and that would be to continue to provide the best voice and video communications as well as best in class text-based communications and innovative features to the users.

Here is what Skype’s CEO, Tony Bates, had to say about the acquisition:

“Skype and GroupMe have a shared vision of creating applications and experiences that are the daily communications choice for a billion people. We will continue to seek the top talent and technology to make that vision a reality. The GroupMe team has created an incredibly sticky group messaging experience that works across mobile devices and platforms, making this a perfect addition to the voice, video and text products in the Skype family.”

And here is what GroupMe Co-founder Steve Martocci had to say about the acquisition:
“There is a natural affinity between Skype and GroupMe and our goal is to continue developing tools that make it easier for people to communicate, share, and stay in touch with their close and important ties," said Jared Hecht, GroupMe's Co-Founder. "Integrating GroupMe into the Skype experience is an amazing opportunity for us and accelerates the execution of our vision tenfold.”

The second Skype-related news in this article is this: this August, Skype celebrates its 8th anniversary. People keeping track of these things will remember that the first public Beta version of Skype was released to the public back in August 2003. In honor of its 8th birthday, the company released a video entitled “The Power of Skype”. You can watch it below. Enjoy!
