The Gold (or Final) version of Skype 4.1 went live this summer. Since then the Skype development team has been working on the future of Skype, mainly version 4.2. The fruits of this work have been revealed to the public with the release of Skype 4.2 Beta for Windows-powered computers.

“The beta version of Skype 4.2 is now available to download – bringing back call transfer and, most importantly, adding Skype Access. The impatient among you can download it right away,” announced Skype’s Peter Parkes.
Here is what you can expect to get from Skype 4.2 Beta:
  • Skype Access – with Skype Access you can pay for the minute for WiFi access. With a single mouse click you can use your Skype Credit and go online to send an email message or make a Skype call. You no longer have to go searching for your credit card and fiddle with login details to access a WiFi network.
  • Call transfer – this one is pretty self explanatory: you can transfer calls to a Skype contact for free; or you can transfer it to a landline or mobile phone for a small fee.
  • Other bits and pieces – like a new Call Quality indicator, numerous bug fixes, better compatibility with the Windows 7 system tray, the way Skype works with the new taskbar has been enhanced, and a better first run experience.

The current stable version of Skype is Skype 4.1. It comes with the following highlights:
  • Screen Sharing: share your screen with other Skype users.
  • Send contacts: take contacts from your list and send them to other Skype users.
  • Import contacts: import contacts from external address books, including Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo!, AOL and LinkedIn.
  • Birthday reminders: you will receive an alert when it is the birthday of one of your Skype contacts (alert appears at midnight, local time; if you do not use Skype that day, you will not see the alert).
  • Skype browser toolbar improvements.
  • Enhanced call quality.
  • Several bugs have been fixed.
