Since the release of Skype 4.0 for Windows with improved call quality back in February, the only big news from the VoIP client revolved around its dedicated iPhone application, Skype for iPhone. You can put all that behind now as Skype has released version 4.1 Beta of its Windows specific software; Skype 4.1 for Windows, comes with some new and interesting features, including a screen sharing one. It must also be said that the birthday reminder feature is back by popular demand.

“Hot on the heels of 4.0, the beta version of Skype 4.1 for Windows has arrived. It adds screen sharing, a feature many of you have been asking for since we introduced it in Skype 2.8 Beta for Mac. Have you ever tried to help a friend with their computer? Or take a colleague through a presentation? Or help a friend with their essay? Or show off a killer move in a game? Well, screen sharing in Skype makes doing things like that super-easy. Just click the Share menu in the conversation area of the Skype window. With this beta, you can share your screen with any other Skype user on Windows, Mac or Linux. You can share your whole screen, or just a selection, and best of all, it’s totally free,” explains Skype’s Peter Parkes.

Skype 4.1 Beta for Windows highlights:
- Screen Sharing: share your screen with other Skype users.
- Send contacts: take contacts from your list and send them to other Skype users.
- Import contacts: import contacts from external address books, including Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo!, AOL and LinkedIn.
- Birthday reminders: you will receive an alert when it is the birthday of one of your Skype contacts (alert appears at midnight, local time; if you do not use Skype that day, you will not see the alert).
- Skype browser toolbar improvements.
- Enhanced call quality.
- Several bugs have been fixed.

Skype 4.1 Beta for Windows system requirements:
- Windows 2000, XP or Vista
- Internet connection
- Speakers and microphone
- At least 1Ghz processor, 256MB of RAM and a webcam for voice and video calls.
