After the release of Skype 4.0 Beta 3, and Skype 2.8 Beta for Mac, we are glad to report that the developers behind this popular IM and VoIP service are preparing to release a new version of Skype 4.0 (the third Beta installment was the final Beta release in the software’s development process).

Skype 4.0 for Windows will be update sometime next month, and the main focus of the update will be on video conferences. Mackies will also get an update, just that later in the year, not at the beginning of February. Getting back to the 4.0 update, it must be said that voice and video chatting will be enhanced twofold thanks to the new codec that Skype has developed. If you have a pretty good internet connection, the update will allow Skype 4.0 to handle 30-frame-per-second video streaming.

According to Chief Operating Officer with Skype, Scott Durchslag the only thing that could go wrong with the Skype 4.0 upcoming update would be to forget that you have video chat enabled and do something embarrassing, like go take a shower.

There are other goodies to be excited about, like the fact that you can run your video chats in full-screen mode, the fact that the video calling green button has increased in size, and the fact that you can enable the picture-in picture feature which allows you to see the person you are chatting with as well as yourself.

What does the future hold for Skype and its video chatting feature? According to Scott Durchslag, the Skype development team would like to take on the issue of three-way video chatting. Although this would be a pretty cool feature to see in a future version of Skype, there is one major problem: the fact that Skype has a peer-to-per infrastructure.
