Turns out that Skype for iPhone 3.0 with video calling capabilities did its job and boosted Skype’s popularity. Just weeks after the launch of Skype for iPhone 3.0, Skype announced that it reached a new record number of concurrent users – 27 million. This is to say that during peak hours there are more than 27 million users logged into Skype.

Skype’s popularity has been continually growing. People keeping track of these things will remember that in November 2009 Skype announced that any time, 20 million Skype users are signed in. One year later, in November 2010, Skype announced that the number of concurrent users has gone up to 25 million users.

The rise in users is attributed to the launch of the Skype for iPhone 3.0 app which was released on the 30th of December. Version 3.0 ( iTunes link ) comes with video calling, a feature that allows iPhone users to make video calls to other Skype users, be they Skype for iPhone users or Skype for desktop users (Skype for Windows or Skype for Mac).

If you are on iOS 4.0 and have an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 4th generation, you can place two-way video calls to other Skype users. You can call someone with Skype for Windows 4.2 and above, Skype for Mac 2.8 and above, Skype for Linux and the ASUS videophone, and of course, someone with Skype for iPhone 3.0. You can also make a video call to someone with an iPod Touch 3rd generation or an iPad – this will be a one-way video call. You won’t be able to see that someone, but he or she will be able to receive the call and see you.

In related news, did you know that Skype was one of the top 10 free iPhone/ iPod Touch apps of 2010? It came in at #4, after Facebook (#1), Angry Birds Lite (#2), and Words with Friends Free (#3).
