The popular instant messaging (IM) and voice over IP (VoIP) client Skype, the version for Mac-powered machines, has reached another milestone in its development process – Skype 2.8 Gold for Mac is now available for download to users all over the world. For those of you that do not know what the “Gold” title refers to, it simply means that this is the final version of Skype 2.8 for Mac.

Skype’s Peter Parkes announced the release: “We’ve just released the final version of Skype 2.8 for Mac – it’s ready for you to download now. Those of you who have already been using the beta version won’t notice any new features, but we’ve fixed a number of bugs.”


For those of you that did not use Skype 2.8 for Mac Beta, here are the features you can expect to get with Skype 2.8 Gold:

- Screen Sharing: share your screen with other Skype users.

- Skype Access (Beta): connect to a WiFi spot and pay by the minute with Skype Credit.

- Improved chat management: sort chats and set chat priorities.

- Quick add: adding people to chats is now easier than ever thanks to the Quick Add windows which will appear when you click Add in a chat window toolbar. To search for a person, just start typing and Quick Add will search through your contact list. To add someone to the chat, just click that contact’s name in the Quick Add window.

- Mood message chat: you can turn this feature on by checking Show buddy messages in chat from the Preferences window, the Advanced section.

- Large profile pictures: you can use images up to 256x256 pixels.

- Hidden avatars in incoming contact requests: by default, avatars are hidden in contact requests.

- Add notes to contacts: in the profile window, you can add notes to any Skype contact.
