Skype 1.1 for iPhone Update Released
More good news from popular IM and VoIP client Skype: following the announcement that the Gold version of Skype 3.0 for Windows Mobile-powered smartphones has been made available for download, we are informed that Skype rolled out an update to its iPhone-dedicated software as well. Skype 1.1 for iPhone and iPod Touch comes with several new improvements and new features.
“Some of you may have seen update notifications in iTunes or on the App Store on your device, but for those of you who haven’t – Skype 1.1 for iPhone and iPod touch is now available for download,” explained Skype’s Peter Parkes.
Skype 1.1 for iPhone and iPod Touch highlights:
- Language support for Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish and Traditional Chinese. This is on top of the English support of course.
- You can listen to your Skype voicemail while you are on the go. This feature was requested by numerous Skype for iPhone users.
- Send SMS messages directly from Skype at very convenient prices.
- Several UI changes.
The SMS feature is the same one you get with Skype 3.0 for Windows Mobile and it works like this: when you are abroad and do not want to send out an SMS and pay the rather steep roaming charges, simply find a WiFi hotspot, launch Skype 3.0 and send a message via the IM/VoIP client. Sure, you will have to pay for the message, but you will pay the standard Skype SMS fee. You should note that you can also connect to Skype using 3G while abroad, but if you do so your carrier may charge you.
No mention of file transfer or push notification though.
If you would like to get Skype 1.1 for iPhone and iPod Touch, a download location is available here.
