Yahoo! has announced that the Sketch-a-Search app for Apple’s iOS 4.0 or later powered iPhone and iPod Touch has been updated to version 1.6. Before we get into that, here’s a brief explanation of what the Sketch-a-Search app does, just in case you are not familiar with it.

The app works something like this: pull up a map of the area that you're currently in, draw a shape on the map, and the application presents you with local restaurants within that location. The app puts pins on all the restaurants within the shape you drew. If you tap a pin, you will be presented with more information about that restaurant.

Version 1.6 comes with a new Dish Filter that allows you to search for specific menu items. So if you for example want to eat some tuna sashimi, you can use the Dish Filter to search for that dish.

"Have a yen for tuna sashimi after watching Iron Chef? Are you out and about and have a sudden craving for Fish Tacos? With our updated Yahoo! Sketch-a-Search app for the iPhone, restaurants serving the dish you crave are at your fingertips. We have added a Dish Filter that lets you search for restaurants serving specific menu items within a sketched location on the map – similar to the feature we provide for desktop searches," commented Deepa Mahalingam, Sr. Product Manager, Mobile Search.

Sketch-a-Search 1.6 follows in the footsteps of v.1.5, which was released back in November 2010 and brought with it the following new features:
  • Zagat rated restaurants in the search results
  • Book a table through the app with OpenTable integration
  • Much simpler way to browse user reviews
  • Very simple way for users to report data changes
  • Simplified filters for cuisine, ambience, star ratings
  • Clean-up of up closed restaurants

Alongside the Sketch-a-Search iPhone app there’s also a Sketch-a-Search iPad app. It’s not up to v.1.6 yet, it’s only up to 1.0.6.
