Yesterday, Murray Hurps presented the first public demonstration of Ad Muncher version 5, which has been in development for 6 years now.

Today, the developer made another announcement, quite a significant one: Ad Muncher goes free! The software drops the shareware tag it carried around for 15 years and replaces it with a freeware one.

This has been quite a week for Ad Muncher, the properly good ad and popup blocker.

It started with founder Murray Hurps presenting a detailed history of what happened for the past 15 years. Read the history to see how Murray Hurps started working on Ad Muncher, how Ad Muncher grew in popularity over the years, and how several acquisition attempts fell through.

The next day, Murray Hurps published the first public demonstration of Ad Muncher version 5, which has been in development for the past 6 years. Ad Muncher 5, as the developer explained, “aims to be the first cross-platform marketplace for web filtering.” There will be a Windows version that will feature a network-level filter and will capture ads on all browsers. There will be an iOS browser app that will have a Safari-like interface. And there will be an Android app that creates a local proxy and thus filters all other apps.

The day after that, Murray Hurps came with a significant announcement about Ad Muncher’s future: Ad Muncher goes free! For the past 15 years, Ad Muncher has been a shareware product priced at $29.95, plus $19.95 per year after that. Soon though, Ad Muncher will be a free product. Users from all over the world will be able to enjoy an ad-free browsing experience without having to part with their hard-earned money.

“Ad Muncher, I launched you 15 years ago, and since day one I've felt slightly uneasy for charging people for the faster, safer and more pleasant browsing experience you provide,” said Murray Hurps. “But now, with the financial support provided by over 100,000 people, I've decided it's finally time for you to be let free.”
