Facebook recently announced that it is implementing a new feature: payments in Messenger. This means you will be able to use to use the Messenger app to send money to your friends and your friends will be able to use the Messenger app to send money to you.

To send money to a friend, you need to start a message, tap the $ icon, specify an amount, tap the Pay button, and then enter your debit card details. To receive money, you have to open a conversation, tap Add Card, and enter your debit card info.

“The first time you send or receive money in Messenger, you’ll need to add a Visa or MasterCard debit card issued by a US bank to your account. Once you add a debit card, you can create a PIN to provide additional security the next time you send money. On iOS devices you can also enable Touch ID. As always, you can add another layer of authentication to your account at any time,” explained Facebook.

Security is important, especially when money is involved. Facebook made sure to explain that it incorporates security best practices into its payment business, that it uses secure systems to encrypt connections and card info, that it uses layers of software and hardware protection that meet the highest industry standards, that the payment systems are kept in a secured environment, and that it employs a team of anti-fraud specialists to detect suspicious activities.

Please note that:
  • Payments for Messenger is rolling out in the coming months in the US on Android, iOS and desktop.
  • The money you send will be transferred right way while the money you receive will be available in 1 to 3 days, depending on your bank.
A short video presentation of payments for Messenger is embedded below.

Facebook Messenger is available for download on Apple’s
App Store, on Google Play, and on Microsoft’s Windows Phone Store.
