In the past you could not send a free SMS using Yahoo! Mobile Web Messenger. You could of course socialize with your friends, but you could not send them an SMS free of charge. This is no longer the case. Yahoo! has now added the option to send free SMS messages to Yahoo! Mobile Web Messenger. So now when you go to m.yahoo.com/messenger from your smartphone or feature phone, and log into Yahoo! Mobile Web Messenger, you will be able to send free SMS messages to your friend’s mobile phones.

“You have asked and we have answered! We are happy to announce that Mobile Web Messenger now offers SMS capabilities – one of the most highly sought after features. What this means is that in addition to the usual instant messages and emoticons, you can now send text messages from Messenger to your friends’ mobile phones for free,” announced Sherrine Tan on behalf of the Yahoo! Messenger Team.

Two other changes have been made to Yahoo! Mobile Web Messenger, besides adding the option to send free SMS messages. The following two changes:

The Searchbox has been enhanced

You can now use the Searchbox to look up contacts by their usernames or phone numbers in your Yahoo! Address book and IM contact list.

SMS and IM conversations toggle
You can now easily toggle between SMS and IM conversations.

Please note that Yahoo! Mobile Web Messenger can run on smartphones and feature phones, as long as you have a data plan. You do not need to install anything, you do not need to go through a setup process. All you need to do is go to m.yahoo.com/messenger using your phone’s mobile browser.

You should also note that the “send SMS for free” feature is available only in select markets within the supported carrier networks. You can send out free SMS messages, but the recipient may be charged by the carrier.
