The words I would choose to describe Chrome’s new tab page are “simple”, “easy to use” and “practical.” The new tab page is a key part of Chrome, a feature that lets you easily search for things online, open websites, and access Chrome apps.

Things change if you get the Shutterstock Tab extension for Chrome . The browser's new tab page turns into a thing of beauty that features inspiring images pulled from Shutterstock, info about the time & date, and even the weather forecast for your location.

By default, Chrome’s new tab page looks like this (see image below). It features a search box so you can look for things online, it lists the websites you frequently visit and the websites you bookmarked, it presents icons for all your Chrome apps. A whole bunch of useful features on top of a plain, white background.

Shutterstock Tab transforms Chrome’s new tab page into something that looks like this (see image below). Instead of a white background, you get to see a stunning image. And instead of the search bar and frequently visited websites, you get to see the date & time and info about the weather.

Shutterstock Tab provides easy access to Shutterstock and lets you easily search for Shutterstock images. In the upper left hand corner you’ll see Shutterstock’s logo and a magnifying glass button. Click the logo and you will be directed to Shutterstock’s official website. Click the magnifying glass to search for images on Shutterstock.

In the lower left hand corner, you have information about the image Shutterstock Tab put on Chrome’s new tab page. Click the photo name to open its Shutterstock page.

Shutterstock Tab’s main attraction is that it presents the time & date as well as information about the weather. There’s a brief sentence that presents the current temperature and a section that features the forecast for the coming days. Click the arrow down at the bottom to hide the forecast.

Frequently visited websites are presented in the lower right hand corner.

Shutterstock Tab will automatically detect your location and display it in the upper right hand corner, right next to a cog icon.

That cog icon is very important. It lets you access Shutterstock Tab’s settings and customize the way this Chrome extension works. You can choose how the time is displayed, remove the visited websites toolbar, disable the weather, switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius, and change your location.

Go get Shutterstock Tab from the Chrome Web Store.

Flickr has a similar extension. Called Flickr Tab, it puts a beautiful image on Chrome's new tab page. It doesn't present the time & date and it doesn't provide information about the weather though. Still, it's one of those Chrome extensions that should definitely show up on your radar.
