Security company Avira has a new (and free) tool that you can use to make sure your PC is protected against malware: Avira Software Updater.

As the name points out, this new tool will help you keep your software applications patched and up-to-date. That’s very important, because the bad guys regularly exploit vulnerabilities and unpatched software in their targeted attacks.

Outdated software is a serious security concern

Some application, like Google Chrome, will automatically update themselves without asking you to do a thing. Other applications, like CCleaner Free, will check for updates when you launch them and will ask you to manually update to the latest release. And then there are those applications that don’t do anything on their own, relying on you to check for and install updates.

All these different behaviors make it quite annoying to keep track of what needs updating and what doesn’t. And that, it turn, means that outdated, unpatched and vulnerable applications are a serious security risk. Even more serious than malware.

"The result is that people have an uneven patching process, with some programs kept more up to date than others. The cybercriminals know this and send out exploit kits that test computers for an array of vulnerabilities and then take the first weakness they find," stated Alexander Vukcevic, head of the Avira Virus Lab. "We can’t stress enough the importance of keeping your computer fully updated."

Avira Software Updater helps you update your applications and stay safe

As mentioned above, keeping an eye on which applications need to be updated and which don’t is an annoying task. Furthermore, it’s a tedious and time-consuming task that nobody likes to do. That’s why Avira rolled out Software Updater, a tool that makes it easy to keep applications patched and up-to-date.

Launch Avira Software Updater and it will scan your PC. Once the scan completes, it will tell you which applications need to be updated. You can then download and install all the updates. Having to find, download and install updates becomes a whole of a lot easier thanks to Avira Software Updater.

"With Software Updater, we’ve answered the ‘how to patch’ question and made the process much faster and simpler. Our user experience is simple, clear and honest – always keeping you in the loop," explained Victor Mihaiu, Product Manager at Avira. “Keeping your software updated is one of the single most important tasks that you can do against zero-day threats – we just make it easier.”

But… And here’s the catch you’ve been waiting for

Avira Software Updater is a Beta that provides support for very few applications. It can find updates for the following:
  • Adobe Air
  • Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
  • Adobe Flash Player NPAPI
  • Adobe Reader DC
  • Adobe Reader 11
  • Dropbox
  • Java JR
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Skype
  • VLC Media Player
According to Avira, the list of supported applications will be expanded in the future. The Beta tag is meant to signify that Avira plans to continually expand the list of supported applications.
