The upcoming version of Apple’s OS X desktop operating system, OS X 10.11, will carry the codename El Capitan.

In case you were wondering, OS X 10.11 is named after the El Capitan vertical rock formation in Yosemite National Park.

As Apple explained, El Capitan will refine the Mac experience and will give Macs a performance boost. Set to be released this fall, El Capitan comes with window management enhancements, improvements to Spotlight search, faster and more responsive built-in apps, and system-wide performance gains.

“OS X delivers unparalleled integration between Mac hardware, iOS devices, apps and online services, and has helped Mac sales outpace the PC industry every year for the last decade,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Customers loved last year’s landmark OS X Yosemite release and made it the fastest-adopted PC operating system ever. With El Capitan, we’re further refining the Mac experience with enhancements to window management, Spotlight and built-in apps, and improving performance so everyday activities — from launching apps to accessing email — are faster and more responsive.”

OS X 10.11 El Capitan – Main New Features
  • Mac experience refinements – new system font called San Francisco; cleaner design for Mission Control; new Spaces Bar for Mission Control that lets you create a new Space by dragging a window to the top of the screen; new Split View that automatically positions two app windows side-by-side on the screen.
  • Safari – Pinned Sites feature for Safari that lets you keep your favorite websites open and active in your tab bar. New mute button for Safari so you can mute tabs that play sound.
  • Mail – Smart Suggestions feature for Mail that recognizes names or events in email messages and let you easily add contacts or calendar items. The option to swipe to delete messages in Mail.
  • Photos – add locations to images or Moments, sort albums by date or title, download 3rd party editing extensions and access them from within Photos.
  • Notes – create checklists, keep notes in sync with iCloud, add photos, PDFs, videos and other files to notes by dragging and dropping them. Use the Share menu to add content from Safari, Maps, and other apps to your notes.
  • Spotlight – displays results for more topics, including weather, stocks, sports, transit and web video. The Spotlight window can be resized and placed anywhere on the desktop. Spotlight understands natural language when you ask it to find documents and files based on when they were created or who you sent them to.
  • Metal – Apple’s Metal graphics technology is integrated into El Capitan, improving system performance and giving system-level rendering a boost.
The developer preview of El Capitan is available right now to Mac Developer Program members.

A beta public version will be rolled out this July.

The final version will be rolled out to the public this fall, just like iOS 9.
