Earth Hour is an international event that would have you turn off your energy consuming devices (that also includes the Mac or PC you did not shut down for weeks on end) for precisely one hour, between 20:30 and 21:30 (that's 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM) on the 28th of March 2009. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and promote action against climate change and global warming. Reports have it that more than 2,000 cities all over the world have joined in, so the question is will you?

Do you have the strength to turn it all off come 8:30PM this Saturday? I know it is hard to part with your computer and all the cool software applications you have running on it, but if you care about the environment you will tough it out – after all, it is only 60 minutes.

Now if you have trouble remembering things, you could do as you always do in this situation: turn to software to help you out. We have covered a few simple means of getting you to remember before – details here – but for the iPhone users out there we have an Earth Hour specific app for you to take advantage of.

The iPhone app in question is called Earth Hour Trainer and here is how the Earth Hour dedicated web page describes it: “It's March 28. 8:30 pm. You reach to switch off your lights for Earth Hour... and you miss. Badly. The clock keeps ticking, and your lights are still on. You blew it. Avoid this nightmare scenario with the Earth Hour Trainer. Its rigorous program of puzzles will prepare your mind and body for the important task ahead: Switching off that light. If you can make it through the Trainer, nothing can stop you on March 28th. Failure is not an option. When millions around the world flip the switch, don’t be left in the light. Think hard and be clever.”

Just to put things in perspective, it is estimated that computers that are powered up but are unused will emit about 20 million tons of CO2 in 2009 – that is the same amount of CO2 released by 4 million cars.

If you would like to get Earth Hour Trainer, an iTunes download location is available here.
