Samsung Wants You to Know the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Are Really Tough

With days until the new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones go on sale, Samsung rolled out a couple of videos that show just how tough the smartphones are.

One video shows that the S6 and S6 Edge will not bend in your pocket. The other shows that, should you happen to drop the smartphone, it is strong enough to survive the shock.

The first video is a 3-point bend test that is meant to show the smartphone will not bend in your pocket. Check it out!

Samsung released the video embedded above in response to a test performed by SquareTrade, test that claimed the S6 Edge is just as bendable as the iPhone 6 Plus. Here is SquareTrade’s video.

Samsung protested by saying that 110lbf (50kgf) rarely occurs under normal circumstances. In normal circumstances, a smartphone placed in the back pocket is subjected to pressure of about 66lbf (30kgf).

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge can take such pressure, says Samsung, specifying that “the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are not bendable even under 79lbf (32kgf), which is equivalent to putting pressure to snap a bundle of five pencils at once.”

Samsung also protested that SquareTrade’s test focuses only on the front side, failing to show the strength of the back side. Speaking of which...

The second video Samsung rolled out is a drop test video that emphasizes the strength of the phone’s back and sides. I remind you that the Galaxy S6 has a premium metal and glass design – it is covered in Gorilla Glass back and front.

Even though Gorilla Glass 4 is one of the toughest glasses available for mobile devices, the 6013 aluminum metal frame is designed to hit the surface before the glass does. Furthermore, the components are structured to share the shock and thus reduce the possibility of breakage.

On a personal note, I have to ask: why would you put your phone in your back pocket? It just seems strange to me. The only thing I put in my back pocket is my wallet.

UPDATE, April 9, 2015. Samsung released an "in-boxing" video that shows how much care goes into putting together the Galaxy S6 Edge.
