The rumors that a behemoth Samsung tablet is on its way were true. Samsung just unveiled the Galaxy View, an Android-powered device that has a gargantuan display of… are you ready for this… 18.4 inches (46.7cm).

This makes it the largest Android mobile device on the market to date.

Optimized for media consumption, the Galaxy View features high quality stereo speakers, has an interface that’s been optimized for watching videos, and it has a powerful battery that can handle playing videos for 8 hours. At least that's what Samsung claims.

JK Shin, CEO and Head of Samsung’s IT & Mobile Business, had this to say about the Galaxy View:

"At Samsung, we are committed to creating new possibilities and bringing our consumers the best mobile experience. We are very excited to introduce the new Galaxy View, providing an entirely new way of consuming mobile video and entertainment."

On the back, the Galaxy View has a built-in handle that you can use to carry the tablet.

Speaking about the back, the Galaxy View has a two-way stand that will come in handy when you use the tablet to watch videos. You can lean it back or you can stand it up.

Let me point out a couple of things, now that we’re all familiar with the Galaxy View's main specs.

First up, the operating system – Android 5.1 Lollipop. Really, Samsung? You couldn’t go with Android 6.0 Marshmallow? I for one want to enjoy Marshmallow’s new features and improvements. I want the smarter Now on Tap, I want to be able to manage app permissions, and I want Doze to boost my device’s battery life.

The battery is the second thing I want to point out. Samsung says that, and I quote, “the Galaxy View’s long-lasting battery life provides up to 8 hours of video playback*, ensuring that users can enjoy hours of content consumption without worrying about recharging.” The * points to another bit of text that says “Battery performance may vary depending on network conditions and device usage.”

I want to believe Samsung, but I can’t. There’s no way you’re going to squeeze that much battery life out of the Galaxy View. You see, the 18.4-inch Galaxy View has a 5700mAh battery. The 9.7-inch Galaxy Tab S2 has a 5870mAh battery. The Verge put the Tab S2 to the test and it got about 6.5 hours out of the Tab S2.

The Galaxy View is significantly larger than the Tab S2 and it has a smaller battery. I doubt you the battery life will be very good.

I'll end this article with an image that shows just how huge the Galaxy View is.
