Samsung Unveiled the New Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

Samsung just unveiled the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 smartphones. Presented as “the most advanced smartphones on the market,” they certainly have a lot to offer: powerful octacore processor, 3GB of RAM, universally compatible embedded wireless charging technology, metal and glass design that has a premium feel.

But compared to the Galaxy S5, they lose some features: you can’t use a microSD card anymore and you can’t swap out the battery because the back panel is not removable anymore; you can’t drop the phone in water either, because it’s not water resistant anymore.

Assuming everyone knows what the Galaxy S5 has to offer, I am going to go straight to what’s changed.

The main thing that’s changed is the design. The Galaxy S5 had a contoured shape, perforated pattern on the back cover, it was dust and water resistant, and it had a removable back cover that let you swap out the battery and insert a microSD card. The Galaxy S6 has a metal and glass design, is covered in Gorilla Glass back and front, is no longer dust and water resistant, and no longer features a removable back cover. So compared to the Galaxy S5, the Galaxy S6 looks better, but isn’t water resistant and doesn’t have a removable back cover.

The screen size hasn’t gone up – which is surprising, because Samsung always put out phones with larger and larger screens. Well, that hasn’t happened with the new Galaxy S6. The screen is 5.1inch, just like with the Galaxy S5. The screen resolution though has gone up through. And so has the processing power and the RAM memory.

The rear camera has 16MP, just like with the Galaxy S5, but the front camera has gone up from 2MP to 5MP. If you double press the Home button on the Galaxy S5, S Voice launches. If you press the Home button twice on the Galaxy S6, the camera launches. It launches from any screen, at a blazing speed of less than a second.

The Galaxy S5's fingerprint scanner worked by swiping your finger on it. The fingerprint scanner for the new Galaxy S6 works by placing your finger on it (just like the iPhone's fingerprint scanner).

The S6 and the S6 Edge are pretty much the same thing. The main difference is that the Edge version comes with a dual edge and with a slightly larger battery. And speaking about the battery, while the Galaxy S5 had a 2800mAh battery, the Galaxy S6 has a 2550mAh battery and the Galaxy S6 Edge has a slightly larger 2600mAh battery. On the plus side, the S6 and S6 Edge feature fast wired charging: 1.5 times faster charging than the Galaxy S5, about 4 hours of usage after only 10 minutes of charging.

Here are the main specs for the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
