Remember the classic SEGA games of old, the ones that you used to play as a kid? Well, SEGA is taking you on a nostalgia trip by giving you the chance to play these games once more, but this time on your mobile.

Earlier this month, Sega Networks introduced a new initiative called SEGA Forever. Via this initiative, SEGA is making some of the most popular games in its collection available for free on iOS and Android.

"Above all else SEGA Forever is a celebration of nostalgia. It’s about allowing fans to reconnect with past experiences and share them with family and friends in an accessible and convenient way," said Mike Evans, CMO of SEGA’s Mobile Division in the West.

"Join us on a journey of rediscovery as we roll out two decades of classic games free on mobile. Create your own ‘SEGA Forever folder’ and collect your favorite classics. Enjoy moments of nostalgia on the go, or sync a Bluetooth controller to enjoy a console-like experience in your living room. SEGA Forever democratizes retro gaming, and seeks to change how the world plays, rediscovers, and shares in classic game experiences."

The SEGA Forever collection of classic games kicked off with these 5 titles:

1. Sonic The Hedgehog

"The Sonic game that started it all is now free-to-play and optimized for mobile devices! Race at lightning speeds across seven classic zones as Sonic the Hedgehog. Run and spin through loop-de-loops as you collect rings and defeat enemies on your mission to save the world from the evil Dr. Eggman."

Go get Sonic the Hedgehog for iOS and Android.

2. Phantasy Star II

"An era-defining RPG. SEGA’s landmark sci-fi epic comes to mobile. Play for free and experience one of the most acclaimed games of its generation. Team up with an unlikely ensemble of characters to thwart evil spreading across the once-peaceful Algo Star System. Combat mutants and robots, collect a plethora of equipment, and unravel the mystery behind one of the greatest RPGs of all time."

Go get Phantasy Star II for iOS and Android.

3. Comix Zone

"Enter the Comix Zone, in SEGA's classic arcade-style beat 'em up, now available on mobile for the first time. Play free and prepare for the first truly interactive comic book ever! You are Sketch Turner, a street-wise comic book artist trapped in a comic book world of your own creation. Journey into this post-punk nightmare and see your enemies drawn before you. Battle the Mutant Queen. Survive the Dead Ship and Lava Mines. Then defeat the super-villain, Mortus, to escape.”

Go get Comix Zone for iOS and Android.

4. Kid Chameleon

"Unleash your super powers in SEGA’s colossal platformer Kid Chameleon! Play free and experience one of the largest platformers ever created. You are Kid Chameleon, an ordinary kid given strange and fantastic new powers through the use of magical masks. When the villain of a new arcade game escapes into our reality and only you can stop him! Using the masks, transform into an unstoppable warrior, high-flying superhero, or human tank to bring him to justice!"

Go get Kid Chameleon for iOS and Android.

5. Altered Beast

"Venture into the underworld in SEGA’s legendary beat ‘em up Altered Beast, now available on mobile. Play free and fight your way through the legions of hell! Risen from the grave to fight the terrors of Hades – you are the Altered Beast. Morph into killer predators using mystical power orbs, then claw, maul, and hack your way to the depths of hell to rescue Zeus’ daughter, Athena. Combat waves of demons, overcome grotesque boss battles, and tear the armies of the damned limb from limb!”

Go get Altered Beast for iOS and Android.

The SEGA Forever collection of classic games will grow in time, with Sega planning to release new games every two weeks.

On the bright side, all the games in the SEGA Forever collection are playable offline and feature cloud saves, controller support, and leaderboards.

On the downside, all these free-to-play games are ad-supported. If you want an ad-free experience, you’re going to have to fork over a couple of bucks.

"For players who prefer a pristinely ad-free mobile gaming experience - folks who want to play SEGA just like they remember playing in their basement, without interruptions from parents, siblings, or homework - we’ve rolled back the price so each game can be purchased without ads for $1.99," Sega explained in a press release.

"As the SEGA Forever collection expands through months and years, it will include both official emulations and ported games that pan all SEGA console eras, each adapted specifically for mobile devices while remaining faithful to the original games."
