Skype announced yesterday that Qik, the provider of mobile video software and services that enable individuals to capture, instantly share and preserve great moments on video, has rolled out a free app called Qik Video Connect and its paid sibling Qik Video Connect Plus for the Apple-developed iPhone. Skype made the announcement because it recently acquired Qik.

Both apps are available for download in the App Store right now. Qik Video Connect is offered free of charge, Qik Video Connect Plus carries a price tag of $2.99. Both applications boast about offering the same functionality: making it simple to record, share and stay connected through video.

“Whether it’s capturing a greeting for your loved ones, recording a video of your child as they score the winning goal, or having a video chat while you’re away from your friends and family – Qik makes it simple to record, share and stay connected through video,” said Skype in a press release.

The free Qik Video Connect app has the following to offer:
- Live video conversations over 3G or WiFi.
- Integrated video mail.
- Broadcast to friends on social networks or via blogs; share videos easily to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube.
- Send private video messages via email and SMS.
- All recorded videos are automatically uploaded to your online Video Gallery.

The paid Qik Video Connect Plus app comes with these extra bits and pieces:
- Use seven real-time effects and filters to enhance your video chat and live video streaming
- Simple video editing tools
- HD quality videos are supported.

“In a world of fast and readily available 3G and WiFi connections, video allows you to transcend the current world of text and photo messages to share special and everyday moments in a more meaningful way,” said Rick Osterloh, head of consumer products for Skype. “Qik Video Connect makes the concept of ‘see what I see’ a full reality.”
