Purplesn0w: Unlock Tool for the iPhone 3G S

More good news for those of you out there that have purchased an iPhone 3G S and want to unlock it – that is make it so that you can use the device on other carrier networks. George Hotz, the hacker who managed to break Apple’s first iPhone back in 2007, has released an unlock tool for the iPhone 3G S called purplesn0w. The release comes after purplera1n, a jailbreak tool that George Hotz put out there because the iPhone Dev Team decided to wait before releasing such a tool onto the web.

In all fairness to the good people in the iPhone Dev Team, they did eventually release a jailbreak and an unlock tool for the iPhone 3G S: redsn0w 0.8 and ultrasn0w 0.8.

Getting back to purplesn0w, here is how George Hotz himself describes purplesn0w: "It’s a soft unlock for your 3GS that I'd actually use day to day. It's not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn't add a task to your baseband. It's very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist (which you need, activate w AT&T sim first, no hacktivation support yet). That's it, no other files are installed.”

Purplesn0w, just like pruplera1n, is a Beta – meaning that if you want to try it out you are very well advised to backup everything else first, just in case something goes wrong. You don’t want to lose your precious data, now do you? For a detailed account on how George Hotz came up with this exploit, just click here .

One question does come to mind though: why did Hotz announce this tool? When he released purplera1n, he said that he normally waits for the Dev Team to roll out jailbreak tools, but since they announced they plan to wait, he took matters into his own hands. Now that the iPhone Dev Team has already released redsn0w 0.8 and ultrasn0w 0.8 for your jailbreaking and unlocking needs, what’s the reason behind the purplesn0w release? On second thought, does it really matter? Just enjoy this software unlock tool.

If you would like to get purplesn0w, a download location is available here.
