After announcing the release of its new Mac security solution Avira Free Mac Security, the IT security company announced that Avira Free Android Security has reached general availability status. The main focus with this security solution does not fall on protecting Android from malware, it falls on helping you protect and find lost phones. With Avira Free Mac Security you can remotely lock and make Android phones scream, and you can locate lost phones.

“Since malware threats for Android are still relatively uncommon, we first focused on anti-theft and remote device management features in Avira Free Android Security,” explained COO of Avira, Travis Witteveen. “We felt these features are something our customers need and want today, and as the threat landscape evolves we will add anti-malware features as needed.”

Get the Avira Free Android Security app, and via a web-based console, you will be able to perform the following tasks:
  • You can remotely get your phone to scream for 20 seconds. The “remote scream” function is meant to scare the person who took your phone and to help you locate the lost phone.
  • You can remotely put your phone on lockdown: lock the device with a 4-digit PIN. You can also set it so a “call owner” phone number is displayed on the screen. When you get your phone back, you can easily unlock it. The “remote lock” feature is preferable to the “remote wipe” feature other security solutions have to offer; your data is kept safe when you don’t have your phone and when you get your phone back, you can easily access your data again.
  • See real-time location coordinates on Google Maps. The app sends these coordinates and you can view the location of your phone on Google Maps.

Avira presented a feature that families with lots of phone and businesses will find useful: via the web console, phones can be activated and deactivated, phone activity can be checked remotely, battery level can be checked remotely, device number and IMEI number can be checked remotely.

Avira Free Android Security is available for download here. The application is compatible with Android 2.2 Froyo and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
