Private Search Mode and a Market Share Blessing for Mozilla
According to Net Applications, company that specializes in providing web statistics, for the past month Mozilla’s Firefox 3.0 market share has stabilized around the 20% mark. While Mozilla is celebrating this significant market share increase, back in the Microsoft camp spirits aren’t as high. According to the statistics, the market share of their Internet Explorer browser is decreasing.
Do not get me wrong, no one is weeping over the IE market share drop and for good reason. The first one is that Internet Explorer still holds the lion’s share of about 71% of the market. The second good reason is that with the release of Internet Explorer 8, which is scheduled to drop next year in January, the tide is expected to once again turn in favor of Microsoft.
What makes the Firefox browser such a big hit with users all over the world? Well, there are the looks, the functionality, the ease of use, and so on, but let’s leave them aside and focus on the features, such as the Private Browsing (affectionately called “porn mode”) one that is already part of Firefox 3.1 Beta.
The simple truth of the matter is that every web page you visit, every site that you stumble upon is recorded by your browser. While this is a good thing for some, it is a pain for those of us that do not want our browsing history in the open. Let’s say that someone wants to learn more about a sextant, but instead of entering this query in a search engine, he enters the letters “sex…” in the address bar. Suddenly Firefox will start throwing out all the “sex…” sites you visited in the recent past.
Whenever the Private Browsing feature is enabled, your browsing habits will remain just that – private! No information regarding the sites you visit while in Private Mode will be stored on your machine, which is considerably better that having to click the Clear Private Data tab every time you leave your computer (which erases your entire browsing history, not just the sites you wish to remain private).
