Preview Torrent Downloads with Vertor, Natively Include them in Firefox with FireTorrent
Torrent trackers and peer-to-peer connections may be frowned upon by some, but the simple truth of the matter is that a torrent tracker like The Pirate Bay or Mininova (to namedrop the biggest providers) will provide whatever you are looking for, including the recently released Windows 7 Beta. The software applications I would like to draw your attention to are FireTorrent and Vertor.
FireTorrent is a Firefox add-on that blends the browser’s download manager with BitTorrent downloads, allowing you to seamlessly download .torrent files. This is how things go when you do not have FireTorrent: boot up Firefox, look for a .torrent file, then using your previously installed BitTorrent client, initiate the download. Things go pretty much the same with FireTorrent – the difference is that you no longer need to install a BitTorrent client, you can launch the download directly from the browser.
FireTorrent is a viable solution if you are the kind of person that only once in a while downloads .torrent files and does not require a standalone software product to do this, nor do you need the additional extras the standalone BitTorrent client comes bundled with. The downside is that FireTorrent is currently in its Alpha development phase, but expect a Beta to drop in the near future (and by that I means the coming weeks).
Now that you are aware of a simple, in-browser means of downloading torrents, let’s move on to Vertor, an online service that will perform two simple tasks: it verifies that a torrent file does not include malware or password protected files; it gives you a preview of the file you are planning to download. Let’s say that you want to download a movie; Vertor will show you screencaps taken at intervals of every 10 or 15 minutes; if you want to download a music album, Vertor will give you a 20 second preview clip in mp3 format. In the music department there is one additional online service you need to know about: coda fm , which will search for torrent download locations according to the band/artist name you provide. You will be shown a list of results and the download link to get the album or track you were looking for.
If you would like to get FireTorrent, a download location is available here.
If you would like to check out Vertor, you can do so here.
