Avira Free Antivirus and Avira Free Mac Security, Avira’s free antivirus solutions for Windows and Mac, got a feature that was previously available to premium users only: Avira Protection Cloud (APC).

The two security solutions also got Avira Browser Safety, which contains both Website Safety Advisor and Browser Tracking Blocker.

Just because you don’t want to spend money on a security solution, it does not mean you have to put up with annoying ads or a mediocre level of protection. Security company Avira proved it believes this when it removed ads and toolbars from its free antivirus and when it added features that provide a higher level of protection.

Avira Free Antivirus and Avira Free Mac Security can now offer a higher level of protection because they got two new features: Avira Protection Cloud (APC) and Avira Browser Safety.

Real-time detection of zero-day threats is offered by APC, a cloud-based piece of tech that got top scores in multiple malware detection tests. Over the next three months APC will be rolled out to all free users around the world. APC was previously available to premium users only.

Avira Browser Safety, a browser extension, is currently available for Chrome only – in the near future it will be available for Firefox and Internet Explorer as well. Avira Browser Safety is made up of Website Safety Advisor, which provides safety ratings for websites, and Browser Tracking Blocker, which prevents others from recording and tracking your online habits.

“Viruses and other forms of malware continue to be the biggest threat on the Internet, whether written to steal money by thieves or intrude on your privacy by governments, the complexity and quantity of these threats are rising. We, Avira, decided to lift the bar against those who want to do evil and provide our global free community access to the best detection tools we have,” said Travis Witteveen, CEO, Avira. “Avira Protection Cloud is a key technology component to provide this advanced layer of defense, in particular it allows us to see vulnerabilities in advance and move to protect all users instantaneously.”
