A browser, a visit to fediafedia.com, and a click on F11 to go to full screen mode – that’s all you need to do to prank someone with a fake Windows update screen.

This is a prank you can pull in an Apple Store just to see the amazement on people’s eyes. Or you can just use it as an excuse to waste some time at work. You’ll can be like “hey, it’s not my fault the operating system is updating and I can’t work.”

Okay, so the prank is quite simple. I’m going to go over it step by step.
  • Step 1 – go to an Apple Store or, if you want to prank a friend, access his computer.
  • Step 2 – launch the web browser. It doesn’t matter if you’re on Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, or some other browser, just launch it.
  • Step 3 – go to fediafedia.com. there are four animated images on the website, one for Windows XP, one for Windows Vista, one for Windows 7, and one for Windows 8. Click the one you want.
  • Step 4 – go to full screen mode. You can do this by pressing the F11 hotkey.
Here comes the kicker: if you type in something and hit enter, fediafedia.com will display the dreaded BSOD (Blue Screen of Death).

So to recap, you can make it seem like a Mac (or any other computer) is installing Windows updates. Type in something, hit Enter, and you’ll get the BSOD.

As previously mentioned, you can do this in an Apple Store, to see the amazement on people’s faces when they see all the Macs in the store are updating their Windows installations. Or you can trick a friend into thinking his PC is updating and crashed during the update. Or, you can just use it as an excuse to waste some type while at work. And last but not least, you can pull this prank on someone’s mobile – just like with the Apple Store example, you can do this just to see the look of amazement on that person’s face.
