Potential New Look for Opera 10

Opera, which celebrated its 15th anniversary back in April, has released a snapshot build of Opera 10. The development snapshot contains all the latest changes implemented by the Opera team in the browser, but since it is still an Alpha build, you will come with the usual crashing, bugs, and data loss incidents. It might not even work at all, so you should best keep away from it. But wait, there is one reason why it is worth a look – this Opera 10 development snapshot comes with a new look (pun was intentional).

Senior Designer with Opera Software, John Hicks, comments: “For those who'd like a sneaky-peek at the development of the new Opera 10 skin for Windows and Mac, this is the snapshot build for you! Things to bear in mind while you're playing with this:
- What you see here is neither complete nor final, and there will be more iterations before the final release. Some elements will still look like the current skin!
- Currently the skin is implemented for the default setup, tabs at the top, panels on the left, panel toolbar on the left and status bar at the bottom. Other setups will look a bit odd - for now.
- This build doesn't include the new features in Opera 10, so one of the reasons for the revised skin isn't there. All we be clear when the beta comes out!”

On a more technical note, the development team behind Opera 10 has run into a rather amusing problem, related to the software’s version number. As it turns out, Opera 10 is detected as Opera 1. The issue was addressed by modifying the US string, but some sites may still erroneously detect the browser version.

The Opera team is aware of the following issues related with the new Opera 10 skin:
- You will not be able to use Speed Dial, some icons are outdated, some icons are missing, and so on.
- Headers will only display the email address for people who are not in your contact list when you are reading your email.

If you would like to get Opera 10, the development snapshot with the new skin, a download location is available here.
