The saga of the Playboy for iPad app has finally come to and end now that the app has been rolled out to the public. The Playboy for iPad app, which is a web app not a native iPad app because Apple would not allow adult content in the App Store, gives users access to all issues of the Playboy magazine, from the ones published 56 years ago up to the latest issue.

If you want to access the Playboy for iPad webapp visit i.playboy.com from your iPad’s browser. To have full access to all the Playboy issues and the playmate pics, you will have to get an $8/month subscription. If you are in a spending mood, you could shell out $60 or $100 for a one year or a two year subscription. In return you will have an iPad-optimized Playboy site that gives you access to all issues of the Playboy magazine and the pics published in the magazine for the past 65 years.

Here’ a brief recap for those of you who are not familiar with the Playboy for iPad saga.

Last year, in August 2010 to be more precise, Hugh Hefner announced that the app would be released to the public. The downside, as the founder of Playboy said, was that the app would not feature any adult pics because of the strict rules against nudity the App Store enforces. “Playboy will be available on iPad without the playmates. Steve Jobs has a thing about nudity,” said at the pajama-clad founder of incredibly popular men’s magazine Playboy.

In January 2011 the same Hefner, also via Twitter, announced that the Playboy for iPad app would be rolled out to the public in March. The announcement was accompanied by the news at that the app would feature uncensored images of playmates – all of them, from the ones who posed 56 years ago, up to the most recent playmates, all the pics from Playboy’s 56 years of history. To bypass Apple’s strict App Store rules, the iPad app would be a web app not a native app because a native app that features adult content would never get approved by Apple.

The app was not released in March, much to the dismay of Playboy fans. Earlier this month, May 2011, Hefner once again made an announcement; he announced that the Playboy for iPad app would be released on the 18th of May. And this time the app was indeed released to the public – even though it was released on the 19th, one day later than announced, at least this time it was released. And so the saga of the app comes to an end.
