The saga of the Play for iPad app continues with the news that the app (which will not be a native app but a web app) will be released later this month. According to Hugh Hefner, the pajama-clad founder of incredibly popular men’s magazine Playboy, the app is supposed to be released on the 18th of May. Hefner announced this via Twitter.

If you are not familiar with the Playboy for iPad story, here’s the lowdown. It was back in August 2010 that Hefner announced that the app would be released to the public, but it would not feature any adult pics because of the strict rules against nudity the App Store enforces. “Playboy will be available on iPad without the playmates. Steve Jobs has a thing about nudity,” said at the time Hefner.

Then in January the same Hefner, also via Twitter, announced that the Playboy for iPad app would be rolled out to the public in March. The exciting news at the time was that the app would feature uncensored images of playmates – all of them, from the ones who posed 56 years ago, up to the most recent playmates, all the pics from Playboy’s 56 years of history. To bypass Apple’s strict App Store rules, the iPad app would be a web app not a native app because a native app that features adult content would never get approved by Apple.

March came and went and we did not see any Playboy for iPad app be released to the public. April came and went as well. It was at the start of May that Hugh once again tweeted that the app will be released on the 18th of May. Let’s hope this time the app is indeed released to the public. Let’s also hope that, as Hefner said, the app will be complete and uncensored.

If everything goes according to plan, the Playboy for iPad webapp will go live at i.playboy.com on the 18th. For full access users will have to pay a subscription charge of $8 a month. You will be paying for an iPad-optimized Playboy site that gives you access to all issues of the Playboy magazine and the pics published in the magazine over time.
