Phone OS 3.0 Beta 5 Seeded to Developers, Dev Team Confirms Jailbreaking Possible

The development of the iPhone OS 3.0 keeps moving forward and has now reached a new milestone with the release of iPhone OS Beta 5 (available to developers only). Similar to the release of Beta 4, developers have received the 3.0 OS alongside iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 SDK and iTunes 8.2 (a preliminary build of iTunes 8.2, necessary for the installation of the operating system). The build string attached to the iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 is “build 7A312g”.

As soon as Apple rolled out Beta 5 to developers, the Dev Team came out with a statement: “Apple just released the fifth beta of their 3.0 OS. Back when 2.0 was still in beta, they released about nine beta firmwares, so it’s reasonable to assume we’re about half way through the 3.0 beta process. As should be expected, the modern jailbreak process is still good. The picture below is 3.0beta5 jailbroken on an iPhone 3G. As we’ve said in previous posts, nothing other than a hardware respin can prevent our jailbreak from working on all existing iPhone and iPod Touches. They’ve chased our jailbreak so far down in the chain of trust, the only way they can fix it is in hardware.”

Keeping in mind that Apple might release several other Beta versions of the iPhone OS 3.0, the Dev Team made it clear that it will not release PwnageTool and QuickPwn for each of the Betas. What it will do instead is wait for the final release of the iPhone OS 3.0; and so should you. If you install a Beta version of OS 3.0 on your iPhone, you might lose the yellowsn0w unlock (permanently).

So what’s new in iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5? Here are the bits and pieces we are currently aware of:
- MMS functionality is hidden away for AT&T users.
- iTunes 8.2 blocks carrier file editing.
- Enhanced YouTube streaming.
- Update: New compass app revealed in a debugging menu.
- Parental Control, with the following options: Don’t Allow Apps, 4+, 9+, 12+, 17+, Allow All Apps. This one might already have been present in Beta 4, but with the Trent Reznor incident I think I deserves (re)mentioning.
