Paris Hilton Fans Get Infected with Malware
The official web page of millionaire heiress Paris Hilton has been hacked and the page has been compromised with malware. Visitors to the aforementioned web page may get infected with a Trojan application which will in turn lead to more malware being installed onto your machine and sensitive data leaking out to the malware spreaders.
At this point no specific details are available on how the hackers managed to crack the Paris Hilton official web page. What we do know, as reported by ScanSafe, the security software solutions provider that detected the threat, is that a directory on said web page harbors the malware. When a visitor accesses the site, a pop-up will appear asking that visitor to enhance the way in which the site is being displayed – no matter if you click “yes” or “no”, the malware download will automatically launch.
Senior Security Researcher with ScanSafe, Mary Landesman explains: “Hilton's popular website, ParisHilton.com, has been outfitted with malware prompting site visitors to 'update' their system in order to continue navigating the site. When the bogus pop-up box appears, users have the option to click 'Cancel' or 'OK.' Regardless of which option they choose, destructive malware will be downloaded to the user's computer.”
So what are you supposed to do in order not to get infected? The first and most obvious answer would be to stay away from the Paris Hilton web page in the first place because according to Mary Landesman only 7 out of 38 security software providers detect the threat. But if you do visit it and you get the pop-up, then you should perform a hard browser close by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del, select the browser and click “End Task”.
This is not the first time that Paris Hilton is the target of hackers and malware spreaders. Back in March 2008 she had her Facebook account broken into and earlier this month reports surfaced about fake Paris Hilton profiles on LinkedIn that attempted to spread malware by advertising nude images of the celebrity.
