PETA Takes Protest to Virtual World

PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) is launching a new campaign, with the purpose of drawing attention to Canada and the practice of clubbing baby seals in the aforementioned country. This is something we’ve come to expect from the animal rights organization; what we’ve not been expecting is the manner in which PETA will protest: in the virtual environment of popular MMO (massively multiplayer online) game World of Warcraft.

Not only that – PETA is also inventing their own Warcraft lore: “The fight against the Canadian seal slaughter has gone digital! That's right, gamers, get ready: This Saturday, WoW players will have the opportunity to combat a team of four Horde seal killers. We need your help to stop them from bashing in the heads of any more seals! Thrall refused to ban the slaughter of seals, despite multiple requests from the Alliance to do so, because Orgrimmar stands to make a large profit from the fur. Activists from across the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor are banding together to put a stop to the atrocious seal slaughter. Anyone who slaughters baby seals for their fur must surely be in service to the evil Lich King,” said the announcement.

The event, which will be held this Saturday, April 11th at 1PM Eastern Daylight Time, is available to gamers from the North American WhisperWind server – more precisely the Howling Fjord zone in Northrend. Players who are at least at level 70 will have the opportunity to combat a team of four Horde seal-clubbers (portrayed as the Undead). And just to make sure everyone understands the seal-clubbers are Canadian, the message in the post that has been added to the PETA YouTube channel (view here) is signed “the Canadian sealhunter.”

Why is PETA resorting to such an unconventional means of protest? Since the Wrath of the Lich King extension features a series of quests for the faction DEHTA (Druids for the Ethical and Humane Treatment of Animals), it is rumored that PETA is just retuning Blizzard a favor.
